On Thursday, July 20, 2006, the Michigan High Throughput Screening Center was named a finalist in Business Review's Innovation Michigan Awards.
What was the innovation?
High throughput screening is a critical step in the drug discovery process because it offers rapid evaluation of a large number of compounds against a single drug target, for example, a disease causing protein or bacteria. The goal of the high throughput screening process is to find "hits", compounds which impact the target. Successful hits then continue through the discovery and development process.
The wider the array of unique compounds in a high throughput screening library, the more likely it is that hits will occur. A highly diverse library also helps reduce costs because hits are found more efficiently.
Because of the new and innovative way it was developed, the Michigan High Throughput Screening Center has the most cost-effective and diverse compound library available in the market today.
What was the outcome?
The Michigan High Throughput Screening Center, part of Michigan's Core Technology Alliance, is a not-for-profit entity and part of Kalamazoo Valley Community College. The innovatively diverse library has helped clients proceed with research decisions faster and for less money. This benefits the entire biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.
It has also enhanced the reputation of Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the Kalamazoo area because the compound library has been featured in international conferences and recognized by international experts.
As featured in a special supplement to Business Review magazine, July 20, 2006.
